25 May 2013 The Londoner's Guide to London
With catacomb tours, stalls, hearses on show and the occassional goth wandering amongst the gravestones, the Kensal Green Cemetery open day makes for an interesting way to spend your weekend. Unique event Hosted every year by the Friends of Kensal Green Cemetery, the open day is an unusual amalgamation of gothic fantasy, London history, funeral parlour and summer fair. A haven for goths and a delightful piece of London's social history, the Kensal Green Cemetey open day is one of the quirkier summer events London has to offer. Catacomb tour Various tours are available to take, including the cemetery itself which is full of stunning Victorian monuments and gravestones. You can take a tour of the catacombs too, which is delightfully spooky, before heading back out into the sunshine for a walk that covers the great, the good and the ne'er do well residents of the grounds. Funeral paraphernalia The large collection of historic hearses on show make for interesting browsing at the open day, and past events have also featured elegant black plumed horses and Victorian mourning dress, too. For any morbid minded Londoners, this could be your opportunity to decide what kind of send off you would like. Plus you can browse the Friend's bookstall for any interesting reads, or simply sit among the gravestones and hope that you won't get too much of a tan to ruin your pale and interesting look. The Kensal Green Cemetery open day runs from 11am - 5pm, Saturday 22th June 2013. Admission is free, although there is a small charge (4.00) for tours. Please note that children under 12 are not allowed in the catacombs.
