The Kindertransport 70th anniversary London event takes place on Tuesday 2nd December 2008, exactly 70 years after the first Jewish children refugees of the Nazi's arrived in Britain. Taking over Liverpool Street Station with a unusual promenade play, the Kindertransport 70th anniversary is being marked where many of those children first took steps on British soil.

Suitcase - Kindertransport 70th Anniversary
Entitled Suitcase - Kindertransport 70th Anniversary, the London station will be transformed into a theatre for the day as the performers recreate the atmosphere of Liverpool Street in December 1938. Mixing theatre and music in three special performances of the show, visitors to the station will be intrigued and moved by the stories that are told.

Seventy years on
Over eighteen months more than 9,500 children were taken on Kindertransport, and rehomed away from Nazi occupied Europe. Saved from certain death, the majority of the children never saw their homes or family again, and their stories never heard. The Kindertransport 70th anniversary London plays will attempt to put that right, as they are relived in this special day of performances.

Liverpool Street Station drama
Taking over Liverpool Street Station for the day, the Suitcase plays invite audiences to stumble onto the scenes of the original Kindertransport as they are played out by the children, the soon to be foster parents, the co-ordinators and the railway workers as they try to assert some control over their situaton. Bringing to life the confusion, the bewilderment and the panic, the Kindertransport 70th anniversary drama will capture the essence of that day 70 years ago.

Music and live performance
Created by Ros and Jane Merkin, daughters of Johanna Merkin who came over from Vienna on the Kindertransport back in December 1938, the performances reflect the original experiences of those on board the trains. The plays will also be accompanied by live performances from the Trans Siberian Marching Band, mixing carols with music from the old country in a truly evocative way.

Suitcase - Kindertransport 70th Anniversary takes place at 10.30am, 1pm and 7pm on Tuesday 2nd December 2008 at Liverpool Street Station.

Tickets for the Kindertransport 70th anniversary London plays are free but must be booked in advance. For more information, call 020 7503 1640 or email jane@khpl.co.uk.
