An exhibition by Leonardo Da Vinci at National Gallery takes place from November 2011 onwards in an unprecedented show of the Italian Master's work. Bringing together a series of international loans, many of which have never been seen in the UK before, this exhibition is set to be one of the National Gallery's blockbuster shows.
Leonardo Da Vinci at National Gallery
Entitled Leonardo Da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan, the exhibition focuses on work produced by Da Vinci during his time as court painter to Duke Lodovico Sforza in the 1480s and 90s. Featuring some of the finest work ever produced by the artist, the event is certain to be one of the most popular in the London arts calendar.
Artistic endeavours
Given his enviable position of salaried court painter, Leonardo Da Vinci was unique among his fellow artists in that he was free to draw and paint exactly what he wanted when not working on commissions for the Duke. With the freedom to spend his time studying human, animal and plant anatomy, he was able to produce amazing drawings, which in turn were transformed into paintings that fabulously combined the real and the ideal. Many works that illustrate his ability to blend the natural and the divine are on show in the exhibition by Leonardo Da Vinci at National Gallery, giving visitors the chance to see his skills up close.
International loans
As the exhibition is set to be the most complete display of surviving work from Leonardo Da Vinci, many of the works on show have been loaned from prestigious international galleries. Lending their rare pieces to the exhibition on Leonardo Da Vinci at National Gallery are the Musee de Louvre in Paris, the Hermitage in Saint Petersberg and the Pinacoteca Vaticana in Rome, giving Londoners the chance to see La Belle Ferroniere, the Madonna Litta and Saint Jerome for the first time in the UK.
The Virgin of the Rocks
London has played host to many exhibitions featuring the work of Da Vinci in recent years, including the British Museum show that examined the drawings of the Italian Renaissance Old Masters. Inspired by the restoration of the National Gallery owned Virgin of the Rocks, the exhibition on Leonardo Da Vinci at National Gallery takes a look at the artist rather than the scientist of creative genius, and even includes a full scale copy of the famous Last Supper painting, along with its preparatory drawings.
The exhibition by Leonardo Da Vinci at National Gallery takes place from 10am - 6pm, Wednesday 9th November 2011 - Sunday 5th February 2012 at National Gallery.
Tickets for the exhibition go on sale from 10th May 2011. A full price adult ticket costs £16.00. Tickets for senior citizens and the disabled cost £14.00, while tickets for job seekers and students cost £8.00. Children under 12 go free when accompanied by a paying adult.
