A highlight of the summer calendar, the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony sees all eyes turn to the Olympic Stadium as Danny Boyle directs a remarkable show to welcome the 30th Olympiad of modern times to the UK.
London 2012
The Olympic Opening Ceremony puts the culture and artistic merits of London and the UK on the world stage at what is likely to be one of the most watched events of the year. Around 15 percent of the world's population tuned in to see the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Opening Ceremony broadcast live, and in addition to the crowds lucky enough to have tickets to see the London event at the Olympic Stadium, millions more will be watching the ceremony on the television.
Danny Boyle
The Oscar winning British director Danny Boyle is the head of the creative team for the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, so you can expect plenty of popular culture references and live performances that pay tribute to Britain's music and film heritage. In addition to the live performances, the ceremony also contains a number of time honoured Olympic traditions, such as the raising of the Olympic flag.
Parade of Nations
Another highlight of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony is bound to be the Parade of Nations, which sees the procession of all the participating teams around the stadium. As Team GB is the host country, they will be marching in last, no doubt to great cheering and applause from the audience.
The Queen
Other events taking place as part of the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony include the official receiving of the head of state of the host country. The Queen will be greeted at the entrance to the Olympic Stadium by the President of the International Olympic Committee, Jacques Rogge, and the Chair of the Organising Committee, Sebastian Coe.
Lighting of the cauldron
The grand finale to the opening ceremony is the entrance of the Olympic Flame into the stadium. The torch will be passed through the athletes to the final torchbearer, who will light the cauldron, thus ceremoniously starting the Olympic Games.
