Returning for a ninth year, the London African Music Festival takes over the Southbank Centre for a weekend of soul, funk, gospel, reggae and more live music inspired by the rich cultural heritage of Africa.
Live music concerts
With a variety of ticketed concerts and free gigs taking place throughout the Southbank Centre over the weekend, live music fans will be spoilt for choice when it comes to hearing authentic beats and melodies originating from across the African continent. Musicians from the Ivory Coast, Algeria, Nigeria, Morocco, Mali and Congo will be performing live at the London African Music Festival, alongside London based musicians who draw on their African roots for inspiration.
Star acts
Highlights of the 2011 London African Music Festival include a special performance by The Vocal Ensemble of Africa, as well as a concert by the Grammy Award winning Dobet Gnahore, who fuses traditional music from the Ivory Coast with her own unique, Pan-African pop sound. There's also live music from acclaimed reggae artist Tiken Jah Fakoly, as well as a gig from Paris based, Congolese pianist Ray Lema.
UK talent
Meanwhile, there's also a special appearance by soul jazz singer Marcina Arnold, who fuses South African rhythms with beats from the London scene. Visitors to the London African Music Festival can also see the six piece band The Rhythms, formed by bassist Femi Sofela, as well as Congolese roots, jazz, afro-beat and reggae fusion group Ruby and The Vines.
The London African Music Festival takes place from Friday 16th September - Sunday 18th September 2011. Ticket prices vary, while some events are free to attend.
