The unveiling of a London Bombing Memorial in Hyde Park coincides with the fourth anniversary of the 7th July bombings. The memorial is intended to act as a permanent tribute to the Londoners who lost their lives when travelling by Tube or bus on 7th July 2005.
Hyde Park Monument
Hyde Park is one of the most famous parks in the capital and is at the heart of many Londoners' lives throughout the year. At over 350 acres it is one of the largest green spaces in Central London and was chosen as the location for the Diana, Princess of Wales memorial too. The royal park is a favourite for Londoners due to its picturesque surroundings and diversity - from quiet, contemplative walks, running, horse riding and cycling to hosting some of the finest music events in the world, so it’s a fitting place to choose for the London Bombing Memorial.
7th July Memorial
As the London Tube and bus bombings took place on 7th July 2005, the memorial will always be a focal point on that date for Londoners and tourists who want to pay their respects to the lives tragically lost. However, thanks to its Central London location, throughout the year both residents and visitors to the capital will visit the London Bombing Memorial to remember the 52 lives lost.
Commemorating The Victims
The individuality of every Londoner who tragically lost their life is represented in the 52 pillars that make up the London Bombing Memorial and as such it is a poignant representation of the loss of innocent lives. The steadfastness of the city of London in standing strong in the face of terrorism and the united front that Londoners of all faiths, ages and nationalities pride themselves on is echoed in the sturdiness of the pillars and the memorial is designed as an uplifting focal point for that unity too.
Dedication Ceremony
The unveiling of the memorial on 7th July 2009 includes a special ceremony that will be attended by the families of the victims of the bombings and representatives from the emergency services whose tireless work and bravery on 7th July 2005 was highly commended. The Mayor of London, HRH The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and the Prime Minister will also be attending to pay their respects.
The London Bombing Memorial is located between Lover's Walk and Park Lane in Hyde Park, Central London and is free to visit. The nearest tube is Marble Arch.
