The London Calling exhibition at Idea Generation Gallery celebrates the 30th anniversary of The Clash album with a show to celebrate the cult artist behind the artwork. With 30 different artists paying tribute to the cover and a selection of art from Ray Lowry on display, this is a music inspired exhibition sure to be top of the pops with art fans all over London.

London Calling exhibition
Ray Lowry started off his art career with illustrations in Punch magazine, Private Eye and the NME and began a cult following for his artwork. Having become renowned as an illustrator and cartoonist, he then turned his hand to creating the cover art for The Clash and their seminal work, London Calling.

The Clash
This album marked its 30th birthday last year, and to celebrate 30 prominent artists have created their own version of the cover in a tribute to Lowry who sadly died in 2008. By reinterpretting the original artwork the various artists are acknowledging the amazing influence that Lowry had on them and their contemporaries, with all these new works exhibited for the very first time at the London Calling exhibition.

Famous fans
Many people have cited Ray Lowry as an influence on not just their work but their personal ideologies as well, amongst them various internationally renowned figures. From comedian Arthur Smith and actor Keith Allen to Paul Simonon of The Clash and artist Tracey Emin, many creatives and artists have been devoted fans of the Manchester born artist.

Retrospective
Alongside the new interpretations of the album at the London Calling exhibition, visitors to the gallery can see original sketches, designs and ideas for the cover, as well as sketchbooks, personal letters and previously unseen photos and paintings, all made by Lowry. Once the exhibition has closed in London, it will then be taken on a world tour, before going under the hammer to raise money for the Ray Lowry Foundation, which supports further education for those from a less priviledged background.

The London Calling exhibition takes place from 10am - 6pm Monday - Friday, 12pm - 5pm Saturday and Sunday, from Friday 18th June - Sunday 4th July 2010. Entrance is free.
