Love cycling but feel that the Tour de France cycle route is a bit much for you? Well, fear not, Londoners of all ages and abilities can pedal in safety in September as the London Freewheel bike ride takes you through the streets of a city sans any traffic but bicycles.

The 12km route covers some of the most iconic streets in London and allows riders on the London Freewheel ride to take in the landmarks of the city at their own leisurely pace. As the number of cyclists has grown in the capital by a whopping 83 percent over the past seven years, it is obvious that cycling is now the ethical as well as the fit option for getting to work or school.

As there is no age limit or set pace for London freewheeling cyclists, the bike ride is set to encourage riders from all over the city. Designed to help cyclists ride from their front doors to the official cycle route, there are several London Freewheel hubs where riders can gather to be led by experienced cyclists onto the vehicle free route in safety and comfort.

The four hubs are located around the city from north to south, and east to west and will be open from 8am onwards. From these hubs, cyclists can be escorted by the official riders or make their own way to the official route. The hubs also provide an opportunity to get bikes checked by the London Freewheel officials and ensure that they are roadworthy.

For the less confident cyclists, a series of routes have been designed that will give you the chance to ride a route accompanied by some of the London Cycling Campaign. Taking you from your borough to one of the four hubs, you can feel confident in getting on your bike safely and with minimal hassle. From the hubs, organised rides will then proceed onto the central car free route allowing everyone to experience a day fo traffic free riding in the city.

Taking in the sights on your bike has to be one of the best ways to see the city, and this ride directs cyclists past some of the most famous of all London landmarks. The London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Tower of London and Trafalgar Square will all be traffic free on the London Freewheel route, meaning that cyclists get to see the iconic buildings without fear of getting in the way of other traffic.

For those that feel their cycling days are over, or indeed never started, there are several vantage points around the city where you can see all the freewheelers enjoying their traffic free ride. Hungerford Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, Victoria Embankment, Parliament Square and The Mall are some of the best places to see them. Accompanying the Freewheel cyclists throughout the day will be mobile soundsystems, bikes from the past and all kinds of other wonderful surprises to keep you entertained.

The London Freewheel hubs are located at:

North London - The Emirates stadium
South London - Clapham Common
East London - Victoria Park
West London - Ravenscourt Park

A free and fun celebration of cycling, the London Freewheel event is set to make the capital a seriously cyclist only day on Sunday 12st Sepetember 2008.
