Prepare to run to the beat in the second London Half Marathon at the O2. With the Olympics coming in 2012 and thousands of people taking to the streets for the 2009 Flora marathon in April, London is proving itself to be a city devoted to sport.

Run at the O2 Arena
Starting out from the O2 Arena and taking in the surrounds of Greenwich, the London Half Marathon is a thriteen mile race with a difference. Unlike most street races, this one has musical accompaniment.

Run to the Beat
Entitled Run to the Beat, the half marathon is an unusual road race for those runners more musically inclined. With 16 key spots along the route where live musicians will play throughout the day, the race looks set to be a great sporting day out as well as a carnival style event for the spectators.

Set your pace to the music
Music has long been thought to improve motivation in athletes when training or working out, and now Dr Karageorghis from the School of Sport at Brunel University has proved it. When rhythmical up beat tempo music is played to runners and people exercising, their performance rate can improve anything up to 20 percent. And now the scientists have put their theory into practise with this unusual half marathon race.

Music hot spots
Sixteen spots around the London race course have musicians located on them to play inspiring and motivational music to the runners as they complete the London half marathon. With music specifically catering to the terrain of the course, the runners should find that they have a boost in energy levels or a sudden sense of motivation when they are flagging - an excellent way to ensure that more people finish the race in a faster time!

Charity sponsors
Sponsored by Leukaemia Research, the blood cancer charity is getting on board the half marathon in an attempt to raise awareness and funds to help with research. If you fancy giving to a good cause and having a musical run, then you can join the Banana Army, who are the charity's running team. A definite for any serious runner in the city and a great way to contemplate building up to the full thing, the London Half Marathon is set to become another great fixture in the city's sportinfg calender.

And if you want to catch all the action from the ringside, then the race route for Run to the Beat looks like this:

Mile 2: Thames Barrier
Mile 3: Thames Path
