Join the crowds to watch the London Marathon
Traditionally watched by thousands of spectators, the London Marathon is the most popular race event in Britain. Well wishers can line the race route across London and cheer on the runners throughout the day, in an energetic, upbeat atmosphere.

London Marathon landmarks
The race route is one of the most famous in the world, encompassing a selection of London landmarks including the London Eye, the Tower of London, Big Ben and HMS Belfast. Spectators can enjoy a day out in London whilst watching tens of thousands of runners stream through the streets, making their way from Greenwich Park to The Mall and Buckingham Palace.

Running for charity in the marathon
The marathon is one of the biggest fundraising events of the year, with tens of millions of pounds raised for charitable causes. Street performers and bands will also be present on the day, contributing to a festival atmosphere in a lively charity event.

History in the making
Over 800,000 runners have completed the marathon since it began in 1981, with runners from all over the world competing in the prestigious race. In recent years participants from over 50 different countries have taken up the challenge, making the marathon a truly international event.

A race for the history books
In 2006 the marathon saw a number of improvements designed to make the race faster for elite runners and more comfortable in general. Changes included the replacement of the infamous Tower of London cobbles with a faster, flat stretch along the Highway and the bypassing of twists and turns around the Tower Hotel Race headquarters. Combined, these changes have reduced marathon race times by over 45 seconds for elite runners.

The Virgin London Marathon takes place on Sunday 21st April 2013, starting at Greenwich Park. Spectators are welcome to watch the race from anywhere along the race route.

The race begins from 9am - 9.45am at Greenwich, with the fastest runners expected at St James's Park at around 11am.
