The Lord Mayor’s Show 2008 celebrates an 800 year London tradition in grand, historic style. Take to the streets on Saturday 8th November to enjoy, parades, festivities, fireworks and more in an historic London event.
Historic LondonOriginally established in 1215 for the Lord Mayor to be presented to the Sovereign for approval, the Lord Mayor’s journey from the City to Westminster has evolved into a full parade and show, involving all manner of officials and Londoners in celebration of the past, present and future of London.
The Lord Mayor’s Show 2008 processionThe procession will include over 6,000 people in total, including hundreds of vehicles, floats, marching bands and carriages, combining in a processional train nearly three miles long. Visit the Lord Mayor’s Show for a unique opportunity to see a grand procession in London, weaving a special route through the City to the Royal Courts of Justice. The procession starts at Mansion House, making its way via St Pauls. The start of the procession will be marked by an aircraft flypast and two minute silence in commemoration of Armistice Day.
Centuries of traditionThe Lord Mayor’s Show has been interwoven with the history of London for some 800 years in an ongoing tradition continuing to the present day. Over this period the Lord Mayor’s Show has marched through the black death, the blitz and more and was even the first event to be broadcast live on television. The Lord Mayor’s Show 2008 is expected to draw near half a million people to the streets of London, with over three million watching the occasion live on the BBC.
Fireworks finaleThe Lord Mayor’s Show 2008 will end with a spectacular fireworks display fired from a barge on the Thames between Waterloo Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. The fireworks display marks the end of the show and the beginning of a new mayoral year and promises to be one of the most impressive displays of 2008. Make the most of the opportunity to enjoy dazzling fireworks in London, started by the new Lord Mayor at 5pm.
The Lord Mayor’s Show takes place on Saturday 8th November, with the procession beginning at 11.02am. Arrive early anywhere along the route to ensure a good spot.
