Historic London
Originally established in 1215 for the Lord Mayor to be presented to the Sovereign for approval, the Lord Mayor’s journey from the City to Westminster has evolved into a full parade and show, involving all manner of officials and Londoners in celebration of the past, present and future of London.
The 2011 procession
The procession will include over 6,000 people in total, including hundreds of vehicles, floats, marching bands and carriages combining in a processional train nearly three miles long. Visit the Lord Mayors Show for a unique opportunity to see a grand procession in London, weaving a special route through the City that starts at Mansion House and passes St Pauls Cathedral before ending at the Royal Courts of Justice. The start of the procession will be marked by an aircraft flypast.
Centuries of tradition
The Lord Mayors Show has been interwoven with the history of London for some 800 years in an ongoing tradition continuing to the present day. Over this period the event has marched through The Black Death, The Blitz and more and was even the first event to be broadcast live on television. The 2011 show is expected to draw nearly half a million people to the streets of London, with over three million watching the occasion live on the television.
Fireworks finale
The 796th Lord Mayors Show ends with a spectacular fireworks display fired from a barge on the Thames between Waterloo Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. The fireworks display marks the end of the show and the beginning of a new mayoral year and promises to be one of the most impressive displays of 2011. Make the most of the opportunity to enjoy dazzling fireworks in London, started by the new Lord Mayor at 5pm.
