Magic Lantern at V and A Museum

A Magic Lantern at V and A Museum will light up the highest dome of the building until spring 2011 as artist Mat Collishaw has installed his light based creation there. Filling the Victoria and Albert Museum's crown cupola with an enormous zoetrope, the installation projects the images of moths fluttering around the circular frame.

Having worked with zoetropes for several recent projects, Mat Collishaw now brings his animated light installation to the V and A for the duration of the winter. Lighting up the inimitable Neo Gothic architecture, the device is the largest the artist has created so far, and its dancing moth effects are visible from many locations around the building.

Illuminated art
Based on the principal of fast moving static images, the zoetrope was first designed in the early 19th century to simulate the effect of motion. Here the Magic Lantern at V and A Museum works on the same principle, but with the added effect of illumination, which creates the illusion of moths fluttering around a light. For those that visit the museum during daylight hours, a replica model of the installation is located in the V and A John Madejski Garden, which allows visitors the chance to see up close just how the device works.

Previous works
Best known as being one of the Young British Artists who rose to fame during the seminal exhibitions Freeze and Sensation in the 80s and 90s. Asides from the Magic Lantern at V and A Museum, Collishaw as recently exhibited work at the Freud Museum in Hysteria and the British Film Institute Southbank in Retrospectre. He has also held a show in Naples this year entitled Superveillance.

The Magic Lantern at V and A Museum can be seen during the hours of darkness from Friday 26th November 2010 - Sunday 27th March 2011. Entrance is free.
