Discover some of the priceless treasures from India's Royal Courts at the Maharaja exhibition London event at the Victoria and Albert Museum. In the first major and comprehensive exhibition of its kind, the V&A is displaying stunning objects from the world of the maharajas, many of which have never before been seen in the UK.

Maharaja: The Splendour of India's Royal Courts
Titled Maharaja: The Splendour of India's Royal Courts, the Maharaja exhibition London event displays visually stunning objects such as three thrones, gem encrusted weapons, a Rolls Royce and Indian turban jewels from the royal collections of India. The exhibition covers the period from the 18th century up to the end of British rule in 1947.

Royal collections
With the royal collections of Udaipur and Jodhpur lending some of their priceless paintings and artifacts for the exhibition, the Maharaja exhibition London event is a unique treat for art lovers in the capital. Paintings include four portraits from the 1930s by Bernard Boutet de Monvel shown together on public display for the first time, which depict the elegant Maharaja and Maharani of Indore.

Changing role
While many visitors to the Maharaja exhibition London event will be happy to marvel at the beautiful objects on show, the exhibition also explores the changing role of the Indian royal courts over time. The show examines the evolving role of the maharajas and explains how their patronage of the arts in India and Europe both supported artists and enhanced their own royal status.

Jewellery
Other highlights of the exhibition at the V&A include the Patiala Necklace, part of the largest single commission that Cartier has ever executed. Completed in 1928 and then restored in 2002, the necklace originally contained 2,930 diamonds and weighed almost 1000 carats. Other highlights include a life sized model elephant decorated with animal jewellery.

The Maharaja exhibition London event runs from Saturday 10th October 2009 - Sunday 17th January 2010. Victoria and Albert Museum opening times are 10am - 5.45pm daily. Standard adult tickets cost £11.00. For more information and to book tickets in advance, call 0870 906 3883.
