The Martian Musum at Barbican art gallery is an unusual exhibition that has curated contemporary art togther and displayed it as if it were part of a Martian Museum of Terrestrial Art. Looking at the world of modern art through the eyes of the alien curators, the exhibition is a humorous and intriguing way of re-evaluating the art that we see every day.
Setting out to better understand humans, the Martian anthropologists have collected a series of art works by the likes of Damien Hirst and Andy Warhol, and displayed them in their very own Musejm of Terrestrial Art. Designed for extra-terrestrials, the exhibition sheds light on the ways in which we take our own society for granted.
The curators behind the Martian Museum at Barbican have used a rather eccenctric classification system for the art on show, and treat the objects as artefacts rather than simply aesthetically pleasing or intellectually stimulating pieces of art or commentary. As the Martian perspective opens up a completely new way of looking at our art and thereby our cultural attitudes, the exhibition draws comparrisons with the ways in which Western society made jugdements about non Western art or culture in previous centuries.
150 Artists have their work on show in the Martian Museum of Terresttrial Art and along with the big names, there are many up and coming new contributors. Joseph Beuys, Cai Guo Qiang, Maurizio Cattelan, Mona Hatoum and Susan Hiller are some of the artists whose objects have been examined and classified for display in the exhibition. With fresh interpretations and comical misunderstandings of the pieces on show, the Martian Museum at Barbican aims to make us look twice at the ways in which we judge other cultures, and at the same time appreciating the wealth and diversity of our contemporary art.
Part of the East London festival, Martian Museum at Barbican is on show at the gallery until the 18th May. Late night openings will take place on the first Thursday of every month until 10pm, where you can enjoy talks, live performances, discussions and a few interplanetary cocktails.
