Mayor of London Skyride
Part of an extended series of summer events designed to get people exploring the city on their bikes, the Mayor of London Skyride will see traffic banished from Central London in a massive demonstration of pedal power. Following the Thames along the Victoria Embankment before winding through the streets of the City, the September Skyride route will give you the chance to see some major London landmarks up close and personal.
Traffic free day
With all traffic banned from the streets throughout the day of the Mayor of London Skyride, you'll be able to pedal along to your heart's content without having to worry about keeping to narrow cycle lanes or negotiating your way past bumper to bumper cars. The bike ride is designed to be accessible to cyclists of all ages and abilities, so expect to see families out with their kids, and even littles ones still on stabilisers on the day.
History of the London Freewheel
Now in its fifth year, the mass cycling event formerly known as the London Freewheel has been steadily growing in popularity. Past events have seen Olympic medal winners Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton take part, as well as Mayor of London and avid cyclist Boris Johnson, and last year more than 80,000 people took part in the bike ride.
The route
The 15km route will take riders past some iconic London landmarks such as Buckingham Palace, St Paul's Cathedral and The Tower of London, and also included a cycle past St James's Park and Victoria Embankment. This year's route sees even more roads cleared of traffic for the day to allow cyclists to use the streets at their leisure.
Local Skyrides
If you want to prepare for the big event or simply fit as much cycling into your summer as possible, then there are a number of free cycling events taking place throughout July, August and September. From leisurely pedals through Hyde Park to access to a genuine race track at the Hillingdon Cycle Circuit, there's plenty on offer no matter what yor age or experience.
