The Metamorphosis: Titian 2012 exhibition takes place at National Gallery over the summer as part of the London 2012 Festival, which acts as an arts-based counterpart to the Olympic Games. Featuring work inspired by three key Titian paintings, this is set to be a fascinating study of how one medium influences another.
Metamorphosis: Titian 2012 exhibition
London galleries often host exhibition featuring work inspired by other artists, and this one is certain to be just as popular with fans of contemporary art as those with a passion for Titian. With three British artists showcasing their work, inspired by Titian's paintings, you can see just how Chris Ofili, Conrad Shawcross and Mark Wallinger interpret the artist's work and transform it for their own pieces.
Ballet shows
Designing sets for three new ballets at the Royal Opera House, the contemporary artists have their preparatory art, various studies and inspired sketches included in the Metamophosis: Titian 2012 exhibition. London ballet lovers are also in for a treat as the renowned choreographers Wayne McGregor, William Tuckett, and Christopher Wheeldon have come together to create the new ballets, including brand new music from several British composers.
Three inspirational paintings
The three paintings used to inspire the artists and composers in their creation of the brand new ballets are Diana and Actaeon, The Death of Actaeon and Diana and Callisto, all of which were inspired in turn by Ovid's poem Metamorphosis. Inviting poets into the mix of creative artists, choreographers, dancers and composers, the National Gallery has commissioned a selection of well known poets to create their own new works, inspired by not only Ovid's poem but also the paintings behind the Metamorphosis: Titian 2012 exhibition.
London screening
In a celebratory event to mark the launching of the new ballets and the exhibition at National Gallery, the Royal Opera House is set to have a special performance on 16th July 2012. This show will then be relayed live to a giant screen in Trafalgar Square, allowing the public to see the brand new works on the cinema screen for free, if they can't make it to the theatre on the day.
The Metamorphosis: Titian 2012 exhibition London event takes place from Wednesday 11th July - Sunday 23rd September 2012 at National Gallery. Admission is free.
