The exhibition from Millais at Tate Britain is bound to attract thousands of visitors this winter. The first exhibition in 40 years that sees a major retrospective of the artist and the first show in the past 100 years that covers the entirety of his career, the paintings of Millais at Tate Britain reveal focus on one of the most important artists of the Pre Raphelite movement.

Renowned for his iconic painting of the drowning Ophelia, Millais was one of the greatest painters of his time and was hugely influential on the modern developments of the late 19th century.

On show at Tate Britain, the Millais paintings show off his obsession with colour and pattern, and his powerful impressions of Victorian womanhood as percieved through his Shakespearian heroiones. An artist whose skill and dedication led him, and his models, to suffer for his art, the exhibition of Millais at Tate Britain gives art lovers and fans of Victoriana the chance to enjoy his work in full.

Charting his artistic output from the beginning, the Millais paintings show the dramatic shift from the academic paintings to the fanatstically vibrant and emotional paintings of the Pre Raphelite period. He helped instigate the arts movement along with his friends and artists Rossetti and Holman Hunt. Together the painters brought the romantic back to British life and rediscovered the Medieval love of nature and symbolism.

Two favourite paintings from the painter are central to the exhibition of Millais at Tate Britain, Ophelia and Mariana, both of which represent some of the most iconic paintings from the period. Representing a magical world of spiritualism and veilied eroticism, both women are painted with detailed care in a setting full of jewel like colour and pattern.

From his mature Pre Raphelite paintings to nostalgic picture of fancy, the exhibition shows the development of his style and allows visitors to discover his less well known work too. A full retrospective of the artist, the paintings of Millais at Tate Britain represent a fantastic collection of work from one of the most famous 19th century British artists.
