It’s time once again for London International Mime Festival, where Londoners can enjoy circus style performances featuring acrobatics, live art, physical theatre, animation and puppetry. There’s loads to choose from and programmes geared to all ages, so step right up for the best Mimefest London experience yet.
For kids and familiesThe fest has performances that are perfect for both young kids and teenagers. Little ones from aged seven up will love German mask theatre group Familie Floez's Hotel Paradiso, an alpine comedy thriller about a mountain spa and its bizaare staff. Parents with older kids might want to take them to see Tomas Kubinek, Certified Lunatic and Master of the Impossible, in his vaudeville show of magic, acrobatics and all round entertainment.
Puppets and animationMany of the Mimefest London performances feature groundbreaking puppetry and animation, include Faulty Optic's Fish Clay Perspex, a series of short character studies with a haunting, surreal feel. Using puppets, armless figures and everyday objects such as pens, Fish Clay Perspex is a low tech but highly original visual treat to engage your brain. The Sharmanka Gothic Circus at the Shunt Vaults is bound to be another highlight of the International Mime Festival with its ingenious kinetic machines and junkyard sculptures.
Circus and acrobaticsWith the huge popularity of Cirque du Soleil growing every year, there’s no doubt that Londoners like their acrobatics and some of these shows feature fantastic displays of circus acts. Appris Par Corps, performed by Compagnie Un Loup Pour l/Homme, uses daring acrobatics to create memorable circus theatre. Mathurin Bolze and Hedi Thabet at the ICA are also presenting a thirty minute show featuring breathtaking acrobatics and modern circus skills.
Meet the artists and workshopsAs one of the perks of Mimefest, London residents can stick around after the shows to meet the artists involved in the performances. The mime festival will also have a series of talks and workshops, where those interested in the performing arts can learn how dance, move and act like a circus performer.
Mimefest London will take place from Saturday 10th January – Sunday 25th January 2009 at the South Bank Centre, the ICA, the Barbican the Shunt Vaults and the Royal Operal House.
