A Joan Miro exhibition London event takes place at the Tate Modern in 2011 for the first time in nearly 50 years. Featuring over 150 paintings, works on paper and sculptures, this major retrospective is a rare chance to see together art from one of the 20th centuries greatest and most prolific artists.

Miro exhibition
London is no stranger to blockbuster art exhibitions and the Tate Modern even less so, but the Miro exhibition The Ladder of Escape is sure to be one of the biggest shows dedicated to a 20th century artist seen in London for a few years. Exploring the life of the artist as well as his creations, this exhibition looks at the major influences on his work such as his Catalan background, the Spanish Civil War and Franco's regime.

Iconic artist
Often seen as the forefather of Abstract Expressionism and creating his own Surrealist language of symbols, Joan Miros work is celebrated for its colour, depth and vivid imagery. In the Miro exhibition London event, art fans will be able to reflect on the contrast between his serene paintings and the turbulent political periods through which he lived, showcasing six decades of passionate artistic outpouring across his extraordinary career.

Political landscapes
Much of the work on show in The Ladder of Escape focuses on the level of involvment Miro had with various political situtions throughout his life. From the representations of rural life on Catalonia, such as The Farm and Head of a Catalan Peasant, to the tensions elicited by the Spanish Civil War, which were reflected in Aidez l'Espagne. You can also see the renowned Constellation painting which was inspired by the Second World War at the Miro exhibition. London art fans are sure to want to see the work created by the artist during his self imposed exile under Franco's regime which capture the essence of protest, such as The Hope of a Condemned Man and Burnt Canvas II.

The Miro exhibition London event, The Ladder of Escape, takes place from 10am - 6pm, Thursday 14th April - Sunday 11th September 2011 at Tate Modern.
