Charting the semi mythological profile and enduring legacy of the last elected ruler of the Aztecs, the Moctezuma exhibition London event is the last in a series of displays at the British Museum that explores the themes of power and empire.

Moctezuma exhibition London
The first such exhibition focusing equally on the life and times of the Aztec emperor and his modern day reputation, the Moctezuma exhibition London event at the British Museum looks at the ruler's military prowess and lifetime achievements, as well as his importance in the religious and cultural lives of his subjects. The exhibition also explores how Moctezuma has come to be seen as a tragic figure, as it was under his rule that the Aztec Empire fell to the Spanish.

Last Aztec emperor
The exhibition at the British Museum follows the rule of Moctezuma, who reigned from 1502 - 1520, and looks at both his rise to power and his dramatic and mysterious death whilst a captive of the Spanish under Hernan Cortes. The famous Aztec has a complex and ambivalent reputation in Mexico today, but he has continued to hold an almost mythological status in Europe.

Exhibition highlights
Titled Moctezuma: Aztec Ruler, the Moctezuma exhibition London event features rare and precious artifacts such as the double-headed serpent from the British Museum's own collection, pictured, which dates from around 1400 - 1521. Other exhibits of note include colonial paintings depicting key events in the Spanish Conquest and architectural fragments from the emperor's palace, as well as some of Moctezuma's personal belongings and a large stone altar.
