The Royal Academy hosts a Modern British Sculpture exhibition London event during 2011 which highlights the vast range and scope of 20th century British sculptors. Bringing together several key works from artists such as Jacob epstein, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Damien Hirst, the exhibition is the first such show to take place in London for over 30 years.

Modern British Sculpture exhibition
London was at the heart of the political and cultural global scene at the beginning of the 20th century, and the effect it had on British sculptors is one of the major themes of this exhibition. Taking a closer look at the dialogue between modern British sculpture and that being created in Europe and in America, the Royal Academy showcases work that was subject to enormous international influence and inquisitiveness. Bringing onto the art scene non-western techniques and cultural references, the pieces on show invite you to consider the dramatic impact of the pieces at the time.

Figurative and abstract
Dividing the Modern British Sculpure exhibition into two, the show also highlights the ever present issue for all sculptors of whether to create a figurative or an abstract piece of work. Pointing out the tension between the two styles and comparing various artists that exemplify one style or the other, the exhibition shows the striking juxtapositions of works that both bear commemorative and political functions, but are hugely disimilar in style.

Exhibition highlights
Bringing together work from throughout the 20th century and from various significant collections (such as the British Museum and the V&A) the Modern British Sculpture exhibition aims to shed light on the various viewpoints of the artists and their relationship with the wider world. Highlights of the exhibition include pieces such as Gengis Khan by Philip King which is made from painted plastic, Barbara Hepworth's wood and string structure Pelagos, and Let's Eat Outdoors Today by Damien Hirst, which features a cow's head on a plastic table, surrounded by maggots, flies and an electric insect zapper.

The Modern British Sculpture exhibition London event takes place from Saturday 22nd January - Thursday 7th April 2011 at Royal Academy. Tickets are £12.00, £8.00-£10.00 concession, £4.00 for 12-18 year olds, £3.00 for 8-11 year olds, and free for under 7s.
