The ViewLondon Review
Londoners are no strangers to getting in line and waiting their turn, so if you’re not one to complain about queuing for a good thing, Moonlighting is worth hanging around for.The VenueFrom the outside, Moonlighting may look like someone’s front door with just a small sign above it, but once past the bouncers and down the stairs you will be met by a deceptively large club - dark yet lively with mirrored panels on the walls and a red carpet floor that ends where the small dancefloor begins. The large, illuminated bar that stands in the centre of the club is where most of the punters are at the start of the night, as well as relaxing on the soft chairs and sofas that line the walls.
The AtmosphereThe initial impression Moonlighting is that the door staff are a bit OTT, making you put all coats in the cloakroom and searching handbags, and mouths apparently, as per the chewing gum rule. The bar staff are neither friendly nor rude, but have to work fairly quickly to serve the demands for drinks and you need to be quite pushy when it’s busy. The rest of the clubbers seem to just be there for a good time, making it a laid back place where people just come to get merry and party on the hot and sticky dance floor.
The MusicCatering for all music tastes, the various DJs usually start with some old skool tunes to get people interested and then follow with a collaboration of anything from RnB and garage to soul, hip-hop and reggae. Their student night on Wednesdays sees DJ Downfall playing some 80s, electro, disco, hip hop and indie tracks to keep everyone happy, with the best tracks coming up towards the end of the evening, which is a refreshing change from many places whose music tails off along with the clientele.
The DrinkPrices at Moonlighting are more than reasonable for most drinks, as well as having Jamaican food available throughout the night. Entry is also reasonable, although they particularly favour women in their offers, and the cheapest night for drinks is on the student night when they’re an impressive 80p a go - the cheapest round you’ll ever buy in Central London!
The Last WordWith the atmosphere of a familiar, local club, Moonlighting is great for a cheap night out with music to suit most tastes, and a dancefloor to appreciate it on, so everyone’s happy. Except the bouncers, maybe.
