The Museum of 1951 exhibition takes place at the Royal Festival Hall as part of the Festival of Britain anniversary celebrations this summer. Bringing together objects and artworks from the 1950s onwards, the exhibition takes an intimate look back at what made the original exhibition so special.
Museum of 1951 exhibition
Designed by Wayne Hemingway's design company and curated by the Southbank Centre themselves, the temporary museum has been set up to run for the duration of the festival celebrations to accompany the various different activities, art exhibitions and events taking place over the summer. Whether you remember the original Festival of Britain or want to get an idea of what it was like 60 years ago, then the Museum of 1951 should be on your summer exhibitions list.
Museum exhibits
Visitors to the show at the Southbank Centre can expect to see a variety of different artefacts on show, from memorabilia, personal histories and memories, to models, artworks and photographs. Capturing the celebratory of spirit of the post-war age, the Museum of 1951 exhibition focuses on the forward thinking attidtudes and social and technological advancements of the era, despite the massive rebuilding efforts and the ongoing rationing.
Patchwork of the Century
No doubt one of the highlights of the Museum of 1951 exhibition will be the Patchwork of the Century which was created for the original Festival of Britain by Lilian M Dring and 80 members of Twickenham women's organisations. Created from scrap material, the patchwork contains 100 squares that each represent a different year from 1851 to 1950, and demonstrates the social and political acheivements made by women during that time. Newly restored, the patchwork is set to take pride of place at the exhibition.
Skylon
Another aspect of the original festival that still remains with us today is the iconic Skylon tower. None of the visitors to the 1951 festival ever saw inside the virtually transparent building, and now the interior is revealed in a projection by Alex Haw which is presented at the exhibition. Immersing visitors in a journey through the centre of the structure, the unseen architecture is revealed for the very first time.
The Museum of 1951 exhibition takes place from 10am - 11pm Friday 22nd April - Sunday 4th September 2011 at Royal Festival Hall. Entrance is free.
