This is an amazing theatre venue with three intimate auditoria, that failed to impress on my first visit to the Olivier Auditorium. First of all, I got there late, which was to blame on my behalf, but they didn't even take the time to realize that I had booked my seat at the edge of one row, so it wouldn't be a problem for me to "interrupt" the performance in case I was, in fact, late, so, in the end, I was ushered to the last rows of the Dress Circle, where, needless to say, the view was much worst than the Stalls and the prices cost much less than what I had paid.
This was fine, because, as I said, I was late, but my major complaint is how long it takes to get there from any tube station and the fact that it advertises it is located close to so many of them, the building itself was amazing and despite everything the reception and box office staff was nice.
The Dress Circle bar was probably the most unruly bar I have encountered in my life as a theatre goer in London. It is quite tiny, with only two barmaids for a Circle that sits about 300+. Being the Circle, the tickets were cheaper, which meant this actually attracted a young "ish" crowd with no regards to queues that the staff members didn't seem to enforce.
The Stalls (that I was able to get back to in the second half), in comparison had a much better "behaved" crowd, but had 3 times more bars.
In general, I believe these are auditoria to come to when a play of your interest is playing (obviously), but unlike some theatres where you go to relax and have a drink, these ones fail to impress and leave the competition in close-by South Bank Complex (of which this is a part) and Royal Festival Hall to win.
