Newroz Festival at Trafalgar Square

Head to the centre of London for the Newroz festival at Trafalgar Square in March 2009. Drawing on the traditional new year festivities as celebrated by Kurds, Iranians, Iraqis and other groups across the Middle East and Central Asia, Newroz means new sun, or new day, and has marked the beginning of spring for hundreds of years.

Featuring live music, dancing, and food, the Newroz festival at Trafalgar Square will celebrate the start of spring in a traditional Kurdish way. This looks set to be one of the biggest ever large scale Newroz festivals in London, and there will be plenty of folk dancing, music, and Turkish and Kurdish food to make sure the event is a big success.

Live music
Live performances at the Newroz festival at Trafalgar Square includes the rapper Serhado Serbian, plus singers Ferhat Tunc, Hesen Serif, Heme Heci and the band Carnewa. The folk dance groups Govenda Asti and Azadiya Perperok will also be adding some colour and flair to the proceedings. Kids and families are bound to have much to keep them amused at the Newroz event, which runs from 12pm - 6pm.

Food stalls
Fans of Kurdish, Turkish and Middle Eastern cuisine will want to sample the variety of delicious food on offer at the cultural stalls that will be set up as part of the Newroz festival at Trafalgar Square. Newroz festivals have been taking place since the 7th century BC to mark the beginning of spring, so there'll be a rich history of cultural activities and events to draw on for the festival's outing in Trafalgar Square.

The Newroz festival at Trafalgar Square runs from 12pm - 6pm, Saturday 14th March 2009. The event is free to attend.
