Nothing Matters at White Cube
When
Wednesday 25th November 2009 - Saturday 30th January 2010
Where
White Cube Hoxton Square and Mason's Yard
Nothing Matters at White Cube Galleries is the latest in a series of exhibitions from Damien Hirst, the long hailed enfant terrible of the British art world. Bringing his work to the two London based White Cube galleries, Hirst is continuing his domination of the current art scene following his exhibition at Wallace Collection and his inclusion in the Pop Life exhibition at Tate Modern.
Nothing Matters at White Cube Hoxton Square and Masons Yard
Doubling up the gallery space for the exhibition, Nothing Matters is on show at both the White Cube galleries, meaning Damien Hirst fans get double the art for their effort. Presenting 18 new paintings overall, the exhibition is set to be one of the biggest of 2009 and 2010.
A return to painting
Damien Hirst has only recently made a return to the medium of painting having concentrated on sculpture for many years now. In Nothing Matters at White Cube the paintings presented are split into two groups, with distinct themes for each gallery. At White Cube Hoxton Square, three triptychs depict crows flying across a blue sky with blood splatters across their bodies, while White Cube Masons Yard features four triptychs with the same crows, reappearing as bearers of evil tidings.
Bad omens
Having taken the art world by storm back in the 80s and 90s, Damien Hirst has been a constant source of stunning, peculiar, evocative and disturbing artworks. Carrying on with his dark and often unsettling pieces, Nothing Matters at White Cube features several motifs that speak of bad omens. The crows in the Masons Yard exhibition are accompanied by animals skulls and ghostly figures, two themes which are typical of Damien Hirst's work.
No Love Lost and Pop Life
Alongside the exhibition of Nothing Matters at White Cube galleries, Hirst also has work featuring in the 80s revival exhibtion Pop Life at Tate Modern, and another solo show at the Wallace Collection. No Love Lost is another collection of new paintings, centred around the theme of death and mortality. Both exhibitions are on show in London until the New Year.
