Now's the Time at Black Rat Gallery is hosting an exhibition of street art by some of the biggest names around. With work on display by the like of Faile, Shepard Fairey, Swoon, Barry McGee and Banksy, this is one show that brings the street art in out of the cold and gives in pride of place on the gallery wall.

Now's the Time
Black Rat Gallery have hosted a number of street art exhibitions over the past couple of years, and now this major collaborative show intends to highlight the very best in street art from the last 40 years. Certain to be one of the biggest and best collections of urban and graffiti style art ever seen in London inside a gallery space, this is the definitive show for street art fans who think that it all began with Banksy.

Traditional street art
For several decades street art has been part of the wider artistic scene, with artists using the outside world as their canvas, be it on billboards, in undergrounds or on street signs. Having initially been rejected by the established art world, artists such as Basquiat and Haring became increasingly popular with a forward thinking crowd of artists and critics, and their work can be seen alongside many others in Now's the Time at Black Rat Gallery this year.

Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring
Taking its name from a painting by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Now's the Time at Black Rat Gallery is showcasing work from the last four decades, and includes pieces from the frontrunners of street art, such as Basquiat and Haring. Renowned for their vivid colours and cartoonish style, these artists have been hugely influential on many of the the urban artists we know today.

Rules were made for breaking
Whether the artists on show in the exhibition have chosen to paint on canvas or brick walls, the ethics that unite them are a general sense of playfulness and their decision to kick against the establishment. Being an anti traditional genre, the street art on show in Now's the Time at Black Rat Gallery focuses on some of the most creative and imaginative artists of their day. By refusing to play by the rules and paint in a traditional style, they have quite often been able to communicate their ideas to a much larger audience than would be able to fit into any average gallery space, by incorporating their art into the everyday.

Now's the Time at Black Rat Gallery takes place from 10am - 6pm Tuesday - Friday and 11am - 4pm Saturday, from Thursday 22nd April - Thursday 20th May 2010. Entrance is free.
