OMA Progress at Barbican Art Gallery takes place this winter to highlight the achievements of one of the world's most influential architecture practices working in the field today. With an exhibition showcasing their work around the globe and several installations on show, there is plenty to excite and inspire fans of architetcture, art and design.
OMA Progress at Barbican
OMA was co-founded by Rem Koolhaas back in 1975 and since then the group has gone onto create various different projects in cities all over the world, and this exhibition aims to highlight their work, past and present, both built and unbuilt, and their conceptual art too. Much of the work on show in the exhibition will have never been seen before by UK art fans, so many of the unexpected objects, photos, films and articles from behind the scenes are sure to be a big draw for the curious.
Modern architecture
The exhibition of OMA Progress at Barbican Art Gallery is the first major showcase of their artwork to take place in the UK, and has been put together by the Brussels based collective Rotor, who have been given unprecedented access to their archives and current work. Putting together a show that features a wide variety of art, installations, photos, materials, documents and models, this is the perfect place to begin to see just what OMA have achieved over the years and how they go about creating those achievements.
Exhibition highlights
Certain to be one of the most popular exhibits included in OMA Progress at Barbican Art Gallery is the raw sequence of every single image from OMA's server, which runs on a 48 hour loop in the lower level gallery space. The upper levels also play host to the 450 items that highlight the history of the OMA collective, including models of the Maison a Bordeaux and the CCTV headquarters in Bejing, and a space covered completely in waste paper collected by Rotor from the OMA offices over a month.
A Barbican first
One of the most exciting aspects of the OMA exhibition for Barbican fans is the opening of the original west entrance to the art gallery, which makes the gallery spaces accessible from the Highwalks for the very first time in the building's history. This will allow visitors to walk freely through the spaces in the way which the original architects intended.
