On the Move at Estorick

A fascinating exhibition entitled On the Move at Estorick looks at the nature of catching movement in art. Starting with the Estorick's own collection of Futurist art from the early 20th century, One the Move at Estorick invites you to delve into the world of human and animal locomotion.

On the Move
Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art houses a good selection of Futurist masterpieces from around 1900, and this is where the On the Move exhibition begins. Taking its inspiration from the advances of modern technology, Futurist art sought to represent the speed and efficiency of man and machine in movement.

19th century roots
Most of the Futurist art on show in the On the Move exhibition takes the form of painting, drawing and sculpture. However, the roots of the art movement can be traced back to the 19th century and the development of photography. On show here you can see the fascination photos taken by Eadweard Muybridge who captured the precise movements of a galloping horse on film which has since become a classic image.

Exhibition highlights
Alongside these early photos On the Move at Estorick includes many other works that demonstrate the wonder of the physical form in full flight. Painting, sculpture, photography and computer programmes all feature in the show, illustrating the range of ways in which artists have sought to depict the nature of being on the move. Umberto Boccioni's Dynamisn of a Cyclist from 1913 sits alongside the photo by Jonathan Shaw entitled Triple Jump from 1996.

On the Move at Estorick takes place from 11am - 6pm Wednesday - Saturday, 11am - 8pm Thursday and 12pm - 5pm Sunday, Wednesday 13th January - Sunday 18th April 2010.

Tickets for this event cost £5.00 for adults and £3.50 for concessions. Kids and NUS students go free.
