Take in work by the German scultor Isa Genzken at the Open Sesame at Whitechapel Gallery exhibition. Starting when the historic gallery reopens to the public after an extensive, £13.5 million expansion and renovation, the Open Sesame exhibition is the first major retrospective of the European artist.

Open Sesame at Whitechapel Gallery
Featuring work from Isa Genzken's Oil themed work originally seen at the 2007 Venice Biennale as well as early floor works from the 1970s, the Open Sesame Whitechapel Gallery exhibition aims to be a comprehensive exploration of the German artist's experimental use of photography, paint, arcitecture and found objects in her sculptures. The Isa Genzken: Open Sesame exhibition also features the column sculptures from the 1990s that were inspired by Manhattan skyscrapers and incorporated into plans to revitalise the archtecture of Berlin in 2000.

Unusual materials
Many of the later works in the Isa Genzken: Open Sesame Whitechapel Gallery exhibition use unusual and experimental materials, such as dolls, clothing, architectural building materials, souvenirs, and furniture to create sculptures that are at once familiar and unfamiliar. Playing with the concepts of consumerism and global politics and business, the Open Sesame exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery has been jointly organised with the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, and gives London art lovers a chance to see Genzken's works for free.

Whitechapel Gallery
The Isa Genzken sculpture exhibition takes place in the newly refurbished and expanded Whitechapel Gallery, which reopens on 5th April 2009 following an extensive building programme supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
