Painting of Modern Life

The Painting of Modern Life is an exhibition first for looking at the influence of image transferance on the art world. With art from the last 45 years on show at Hayward Gallery, the exhibition charts the progress of photographic images and their use in contemporary painting.

Starting with artists from the sixties who pioneered the technique of using photographic images on canvas and then manipulating them with paint, the Painting of Modern Life looks at the ways in which this developmental style has evolved. Gerhard Richter and Andy Warhol feature in the exhibition at Hayward Gallery as exponents of the style during the Pop Art period. Over 100 major photo inspired works are on show in the exhibition.

An international art movement that has seen 45 years of photo inspired work brought to galleries in Britain and all over the world, the show looks at the similarities and differences in the way that each artist has approached the technique. The exhibition also takes stock of the nature of the art included in the Painting of Modern Life, examining the variety of subject matter, whether personal or political.

Throughout the exhibition period, a series of events allow visitors to the Hayward to hear from some of the painters themselves and take part in discussions of the works on show.
