Celebrate the joys of another summer's weekend with Paradise Gardens at Victoria Park. Based on the delightfully old fashioned Victorian concept of parks as pleasure gardens full of fun, sparkle and entertainment, Paradise Gardens brings you all the fun of the fair, the circus and the village fete put together.
Free arts event
Taking place once again in June 2011 courtesy of Tower Hamlets council, Paradise Gardens at Victoria Park sees live music, DJs, unusual performances, circus and street theatre, kids events, market and food stalls and fairground rides to keep you going. Sure to be one of the most exciting and vibrant events to take place over the weekend, Paradise Gardens also has the benefit of being free.
Festival highlights
Fantastic highlights of last year's outdoor mini festival included the the perfomances by the Footsbarn Travelling Theatre. Combining circus performances with burlesque acts, the production of Sorry! featured a madcap scene where undertakers held a funderal at the same time and place as a family of gypsies celebrating a wedding. The show entertained audiences with outstanding big top acts and a whole host of fairground fun, and more madcap fun is bound to be on the programme for 2011 once it's announced.
Live music
For those that love their live music, there is plenty to get excited about at the festival, with tunes from around the world being played on the Paradise Stage. Last year, the programme was overseen by Continental Drifts and The Barbican over the course of Paradise Gardens at Victoria Park with Brass Roots, Jazz Jamaica, Son of Dave and The Correspondents all playing live. Click back soon for further information on the 2011 roundup.
Tea and cake
Other highlights of the 2010 event included the chance to put your best foot forward with the help of the Sugar Foot Stompers Dance Company and the London Swing Dance Society, who hosted regular dance sessions throughout the weekend. Tea and cake was supplied by the Women's Institute in the Village Fete area, meaning there was always time for a sit down with a cup of char and slice of Victoria Sponge.
Village Fete area
Last but not least, anyone heading to Paradise Gardens at Victoria Park should visit the Village Fete for a taste of creativity. A play area for kids, the Victoria Park Books Reading Corner for a quiet relaxed moment or two, and several exhibitions are all in store, plus the chance to whizz through the air on any number of the fantastic vintage fairground rides at Carter's Steam Fair.
