An exhibition by Paul Sandby at Royal Academy takes place over summer 2010 as work by the father of English watercolour painting is highlighted for its range and influence.

Paul Sandby at Royal Academy
With over 80 works on show by this English artist who was celebrated in his day, the exhibition of Paul Sandy at Royal Academy of Arts demonstrates just why this artist was so influential over other watercolour painters such as Thomas Girtin and J.M.W Turner. Capturing the British landscapes and its characters, the paintings on show in this exhibition will go some way to reinstate Sandby as one of the major watercolour artists of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Royal Academy founder member
Not only does the exhibition by Paul Sandby at Royal Academy mark the bicentenary of the artist's death, it also celebrates the art of one of the foundation members of the Royal Academy of Arts. Having spent time as a military draughtsman and a professional artist, Sandby captured the sights of various British landscapes from rural, moden, urban and historical scenes, and helped define Britain as one united nation state in his pictures of Surrey, Scotland, Wales and London.

Captured on canvas
In a style similar to Hogarth, Sandby captured the essence of life on the streets of various places around the UK, along with his depictions of countrylife. Depicting the vast economic and social changes that were current in his most prolific painting period, the paintings on show in the exhibition of Paul Sandby at Royal Academy demonstrate his quick eye, his draughtsman-like skill and his innate sense of diversity with each different location he paints.

The exhibition by Paul Sandby at Royal Academy of Arts takes place from 10am - 6pm, Saturday 13th March - Sunday 13th June 2010. Tickets are 9.00, or £7.00-£8.00 for concessions. Children aged 12 - 18 years are £4.00, 8 - 11 years are £3.00 and under 7s are free.
