Celebrating 170 years of photography by displaying a selection of images from its 300,000 strong collection, the photography exhibition at British Library is the first of its kind at the famous venue. Titled Points of View: Capturing the 19th Century in Photographs, the exhibition charts photography's progress from an exclusive pursuit of the rich to a mass pastime by the beginning of the 20th century.

Photography exhibition at British Library
From rare nineteenth century portraits and war photography to scientific experiments and shots of London street life, the photography exhibition at British Library looks at the various forms photography has taken, and the uses to which it has been put, since its invention in 1839. Displaying rare and early examples of X-ray photographs, negatives, daguerreotypes and calotypes, the Points of View exhibition is free to attend.

Early experiments
Unusual images in photography exhibition at British Library include William Henry Fox Talbot's photographic experiments with botanical specimens in the 1830's, and Anna Atkins' beautiful and delicate cameraless images of algae taken between 1843 - 1853. The show also charts the emergence of travel photography, and displays some of the earliest images from the far East.

London's history
Nelson's Column and the London Underground might seem like permanent and fixtures in the city's landscape now, but a number of images show these iconic London landmarks under construction in the nineteenth century. Other photographic studies that will draw the attention of Londoners include the 1852 image of the hippopotamus at the Zoological Gardens at Regent's Park, pictured, and workers taking a break from the construction of Crystal Palace around 1852.

Special events
Alongside the 250 photos on display, a special programme of talks and activities have been planned to tie into the exhibition. Highlights include Imagining the Impossible, a Halloween special looking at the world of spirit photography, and a Victorian magic lantern show on Sunday 29th November 2009. Other events include a mass participation photographic event, Capture Kings Cross, on 27th February 2010.
