A stunning Picasso exhibition in London is something that thousands of art lovers will be keen to get into, and the National Gallery's Challenging the Past is sure to be overwhelmed by visitors during its four month run. Showcasing masterpieces from the star of Cubism, the Picasso exhibition looks at paintings from the very earliest years of his career, right up to the end of his life.

Picasso: Challenging the Past
Entitled, Picasso, Challenging the Past, the Picasso exhibition London location is of course the most famous of all London's galleries. Examining the ways in which Picasso made reference to previous painters and constantly sought to challenge the Old Masters, the exhibition at the National Gallery makes great use of the many works already housed here, along with contributions from other galleries, including the Musee National Picasso and the Musee de Louvre in Paris. Famous works such as the Reclining Nude, pictured, are bound to draw in the crowds during the exhibitions's run at the National Gallery.

Sources of inspiration
From the beginnings of his painting life Pablo Picasso studied the grand European Old Masters and frequently visited galleries filled with inspirational works. Artists such as Valazquez, Goya, Rembrandt, Manet and Cezanne were crucial influences on his work, and these influences will be explored in this new Picasso exhibition.

London exhibition
London will be home to the 60 odd works by Picasso from February to June 2009, and its central theme is to explore the ways in which he challenged the accepted notions of the past, and reinvented many classic painterly traditions. Themes that were confronted head on by the artist throughout his career are given separate sections within the Picasso exhibition, such as the male and female nude, the still life and the seated female figure.

The playful side to Picasso
More obvious references to the styles of Old Masters are made obvious through paintings that are simply Picasso variations on great works, such as Manet's Dejeuner sur l'Herbe. Full of a notion of parody and irreverence, these nods to great painters and their well renowned works is typical of Picasso and his urge to reinvent what he saw as the old fashioned European traditions of painting.

Revolutionary work
By exploring his relationship with the Old Masters and the art of the past, the Picasso exhibition shows his daring transformation of the art world and highlights the differences between the previous traditions and ones that Picasso himself was trying to create.

Challenging the Past, the Picasso exhibition London event takes place from Wednesday 25th February to Sunday 7th June 2009. Tickets are available now by calling 0844 209 1778. Adult tickets are £12.50, 12 to 18 years olds cost £6.00, and children under 12 are free.
