A Pirates exhibition at Museum of London Docklands takes place during 2011 to mark the anniversary of the execution of Captain Kidd and to explore the history of pirates in London. Telling tales of the high seas and the corruption of London's East India Company, the show reveals how close the links between the city and piracy really were.
Pirates exhibition at Museum of London Docklands
Inviting visitors to discover the truth behind the myths and mysteries of pirates over the last 400 years, the exhibition centres on Captain Kidd and how his image and reputation sporned the pirate character which has become so well known to us. Inspiring the likes of Treasure Island and the Pirates of the Caribbean, pirates play a key part in British sea faring and trading culture, and the Museum of London Docklands gets to grips with London's pirates in the 17th century.
Captain Kidd
Captain Kidd was executed on 23rd May 1701 at Wapping, and the Pirates exhibition at Museum of London Docklands marks this anniversary by examining the role he played in the invention and the propogation of the pirate myth. A legendary Scottish privateer turn pirate, Kidd was involved in many skirmishes and actually spent some of his time hunting pirates under a commission from King William III. Here you can see just what kind of acts he committed and also learn more about the nature of the colonies, the India trade, and the corruption of politicians and merchants, which allowed piracy to flourish.
Exhibition highlights
Looking both at the history of pirates and their influence on our culture, the exhibition includes a vast array of fascinating objects. Key items on show at the Museum of Docklands feature Captain Kidd's last letter mentioning hidden treasure, a 17th century cannon, Captain Johnson's A General History of the Pyrates, a genuine pirate flag and gibbet cage, and an outfit from Vivienne Westwood's Pirates collection from 1983. Bringing back to life the pirates that would have docked in the Thames and travelled to the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean looting treasure for themselves and their paymasters, the Pirates exhibition at Museum of London Docklands opens a treasure trove of exciting and inspiring exhibits.
The Pirates exhibition, the Captain Kidd Story, at Museum of London Docklands takes place from Friday 20th May - Sunday 30th October 2011. Tickets are £7.00 and £5.00 for children, or £6.00 and £4.00 in advance.
