See Alfred Hitchcock's directorial debut set to a newly commissioned live score at The Pleasure Garden Wiltons Music Hall screening, when the historic East End music hall is filled with the images of glamorous chorus girls once more.
World premiere
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1925, The Pleasure Garden has been painstakingly restored by the British Film Institute (BFI) in time for the London 2012 Festival. The Pleasure Garden at Wiltons Music Hall screening is just one of the silent films by Hitchcock to be shown at atmospheric and unusual London locations this summer, each one accompanied by newly commissioned, live musical scores.
Early work
Although The Pleasure Garden was made when Hitchcock was just 25 years old, many of the signature themes and idiosyncrasies to be found in his more famous later works are present, proving that his belief in a strong directorial voice was present right from the beginning of his career. To accompany the world premiere of the newly restored version of The Pleasure Garden at Wiltons Music Hall, the BFI have commissioned a new score from emerging talent Daniel Patrick Cohen, which will be performed on the night by the Royal Academy of Music Manson Ensemble.
The story
Hitchcock's directorial debut follows the romances and fortunes of two chorus girls, Patsy Brand and Jill Cheyne, who work at the Pleasure Garden music hall. After her marriage to the soldier Levett, Patsy continues with her life in London and waits for her husband to send for her from his station in the tropics, although the marriage is soon marred by infidelity, jealousy and violence. The Pleasure Garden at Wiltons Music Hall screening gives film fans a rare chance to see this fine example of silent cinema on the big screen once more.
Atmospheric setting
Other restored silent films by Alfred Hitchcock to be screened during the London 2012 Festival include The Lodger and Blackmail, two thrillers that make the most of London's atmospheric landmarks and culture. The screening of The Pleasure Garden takes place within the capital's oldest surviving music hall, a hidden gem of the East End whose crumbling architecture and rich history makes it the ideal location for Hitchcock's story of chorus girls and murderous lovers.
The Pleasure Garden at Wiltons Music Hall screenings take place from 7.30pm, Thursday 28th June - Friday 29th June 2012. For more information and to buy tickets, call the BFI on 020 7928 3232.
