Charting the 170 year history of photography from 1839, the Points of View exhibition London event is the first major exhibition of its kind at the British Library. With free admission for all to see the 250 photos on display, the exhibition is ideal for art lovers, photography fans, and history buffs.
Points of View photography show
Putting some of the 300,000 photographic artifacts from the British Library collection on show, the Points of View exhibition London event displays rare and early examples of the art form, including daguerreotypes and calotypes, X-ray photographs and spirit photography. Depicting everything from war scenes, tourist pictures, portraits, and images from the fields of industry and science, the exhibition is also accompanied by a series of photography themed talks and events at the library.
Dawn of photography
In an age when virtually everyone seems to have a camera phone, perhaps it's easy to forget that in its infancy, photography was almost exclusively the preserve of the very well to do. The exhibition at the British Library follows photography's progress from an experimental and complicated pursuit to a popular amateur pastime in the early 20th century.
Recording history
The importance of photography as a social document and recorder of historical events is apparant throughout the Points of View exhibition; London landmarks such as Nelson's Column and the Central Line of the London Underground can be seen halfway through construction. Other images depicting pivotal moments in modern history include an 1864 photo of dead and dying soldiers on the fields of Gettysburg during the American Civil War.
Exhibition highlights
Unusual examples of nineteenth century photography include Josef Maria Eder and Eduard Valenta's X-ray photo of frogs, which was taken during the short lived and dangerous craze for amateur X-ray photography in the 1890's. Other images in the Points of View exhibition London event that celebrate the fusion of art and imagination with scientific knowledge and technology include Anna Atkins' cameraless images of British algae, taken between 1843 - 1853, and William Henry Fox Talbot's calotype of an oak tree.
Events at the British Library
The exhibition titled Points of View: Capturing the 19th Century in Photographs will be accompanied by a series of events throughout the winter of 2009 and spring of 2010, including Imagining the Impossible, a Halloween special looking at the bizarre world of spirit photography. There will also be a Victorian magic lantern show on Sunday 29th November 2009, and a mass participation photography event on 27th February 2010.
