Known as Bear in the Square, the ice sculpture of a polar bear at Trafalgar Square is the creation of artist Mark Coreth. Carved from a huge chunk of ice, the polar bear will gradually melt over the course of ten days to reveal a bronze skeleton at its core.

Ice Bear Project
The brainchild of the not for profit organisation Ice Bear Project, the polar bear at Trafalgar Square has been produced in partnership with the WWF, the World Wildlife Fund. Unusually for an arts installation, members of the public are able to touch the ice sculpture so that the viewers play a role in shaping and changing the art work during the exhibition.

Environmental message
While the polar bear at Trafalgar Square is sure to be popular with kids, families and art lovers of all ages, the ice sculpture has a serious message too. There are thought to be only 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears left in the wild, and they are increasingly vulnerable to the threat of global warming and climate change.

Christmas event
Available to see at the iconic central London landmark in the run up to Christmas, it's hoped that the polar bear at Trafalgar Square will be the first of many planned ice sculptures in major cities across the world. Plans are being made for an Ice Bear tour to take in cities such as Paris, New York, Tokyo and Sydney, but families and art lovers have the chance to see the sculpture by Mark Coreth first just before Christmas 2009 on the Northern Terrace of Trafalgar Square.

The polar bear at Trafalgar Square can be seen for ten days from Friday 11th December 2009. Admission to the exhibition is free.
