Pompeo Batoni was one of the most celebrated painters in Rome and was hugely influential not just in his native Rome, but beyond Italy and across the continent. For nearly 50 years he captured the faces and characters of travellers to Italy with amazing skill and vibrancy. One of the most gifted painters of his day, he was equally accomplished with mythological paintings and religious pieces too.

Works by him were eagerly bought by collecters across Britain and Europe, and some of the greatest patrons of the time were amongst his fans. From painting the portraits of sitters on the European Grand Tour to conjuring up the mythological world of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, Pompeo Batoni is often viewed as Italy's last Old Master. On show are some of the finest examples of his work curated from public and private collections in America, creating a show that is the first comprehensive exhibition of his work in forty years.
