Featuring a stunning collection of works from the 18th century, the exhibition of Pompeo Batoni at National Gallery illustrates just how influential the painter was. Celebrating the 300th anniversary of his birth, the show includes many paintings that have never before been seen in public.

Pompeo Batoni was one of the most celebrated painters in Rome and was hugely influential not just in his native Rome, but beyond Italy and across the continent. For nearly 50 years he captured the faces and characters of travellers to Italy with amazing skill and vibrancy. One of the most gifted painters of his day, he was equally accomplished with mythological paintings and religious pieces too.

Works by him were eagerly bought by collecters across Britain and Europe, and some of the greatest patrons of the time were amongst his fans. The exhibition of Pompeo Batoni at National Gallery features many of these amazing paintings and shows just why he is viewed as one of the most memorable artists of the eighteenth century.

From painting the portraits of sitters on the European Grand Tour to conjuring up the mythological world of the Ancient Greeks and Romans, Pompeo Batoni is often viewed as Italy's last Old Master. On show are some of the finest examples of his work curated from public and private collections in America, creating a show that is the first comprehensive exhibition of his work in forty years.

Along with works that have never before been seen in public, several newly discovered and recently restored paintings are also on show in the exhibition. Those who see the works of Pompeo Batoni at National Gallery will have no doubt in his mind that he was Rome's most sought after painter for portraits and history paintings. A vivid and wonderful series of paintings, any fan of Italian or 18th century paintings should definitely put this exhibition on their to do list.

The exhibition by Pompeo Batoni at National Gallery is on show until the 18th May 2008.
