A Postmodernism exhibition London event takes place at the V&A Museum this year to explore the contentious and often contraversial theme of Postmodernist art and design. Taking in art, design, fashion, architecture, film, music and graphics, the exhibition sets out to show how the movement evolved from the 70s into the 80s and went onto change huge parts of popular culture along the way.

Postmodernism exhibition
London will witness the very first in depth exhibition about this period as the V&A examine the radical ideas that overthrew Modernism for good. Discarding the idea of pure and simple design, the Postmodernism exhibition invites visitors to revel in the colour, pattern, parody, wit and artifice that gave the movement its freedom.

Style and subversion
Subtitled Style and Subversion 1970 - 1990, the V&A have brought together over 250 objects that recollect a time when style was more than just a look. From the subversive designs of Studio Alchymia and Memphis, to graphics by Peter Saville and Neville Brody, paintings by Robert Rauschenburg and Andy Warhol to performance costumes worn by David Byrne, there will be plenty on show to inspire fans of the genre at the Postmodernism exhibition.

Architecture
Much of the Postmodernism exhibition is devoted to the key apsect of architecture, in which the idea of Postmodernism first emerged. Combining elements of the past and mixing them with the present, architects and designers at the time brought together various cultural fragments in a collage style to create their pieces. One of the highlights of the show will no doubt be thefull scale reconstruction of an architectural facade by Hans Hollein from 1980.

Art, fashion and music
Having moved on from the world of architecture the Postmodernist concept gained a foothold in art, design, music, fashion, performance and club culture, and these influences provide some of the most instantly recognisable artefacts included in the Postmodernism exhibition. London art and culture fans will be thrilled to see the likes of photography by Guy Bourdain and Helmut Newton, stage costumes from Annie Lennox and Devo, and turntables used by hip hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash.

The death of Postmodernism
In the final section of the V&A show, visitors can enjoy the prospect of seeing the culture of consumerism at its peak. With Andy Warhol's Dollar Sign paintings, Karl Lagerfeld's Chanel designs and a Mickey Mouse tea set designed by Michael Graves, the Postmodernism exhibition highlights the all consuming excesses that were part of the inflated commodity culture of the 1980s. To finish the show, visitors are then invited to view what was then seen as an uncertain moment in the art and design world, with the death of Postmodernism, and how that period reflects on the current trends of today.

The Postmodernism exhibition London event takes place from Saturday 24th September 2011 - Sunday 8th January 2011 at V&A Museum. Tickets are £11.00.
