Prima Donna focuses on Regine Saint Laurent, once the world’s biggest opera star she is now preparing for her return after six years away from the stage but must tackle important themes from her past as she does so.

The Prima Donna opera is penned by one of the world’s best-known singer-songwriters, the award-winning Grammy nominee, Rufus Wainwright. Wainwright is perhaps best known for his work as a solo artist, bringing his unique song writing sound to audiences via albums such as Poses, the Want albums, Release the Stars and his celebrated eponymous debut album, Rufus Wainwright.

Critical acclaim
Prima Donna made its debut at the 2009 Manchester International Festival, where it received a rapturous welcome from audiences and critics alike. The opera was praised for its beautiful exploration of loss, betrayal, delusion and nostalgia as the sounds of opera’s richest phase are brought to life. Prima Donna will also feature Janis Kelly reprising the role of Regine Saint Lauret, performing a libretto sung in French, with surtitles.
