Ten artists from around the world have come together to produce Psycho Buildings at Hayward Gallery, an unusual and exciting exhibition based around art and architecture. With all the gallery space taken up with installations and scuptures spilling out into the outdoor spaces too, Psycho Buildings is a fascinating show that will make you think twice about the nature of architecture and buildings from here on in.
Enchanting, disconcerting, intriguing and occassionally disturbing, the Psycho Buildings at
Hayward Gallery brings together several habitat like structures and architectural spaces to create mental spaces as well as physical ones. Inviting you into their houses and constructions, the artists are also inviting you to take a wander around their unconscious too.
Ten atmospheric installations have been created by some of the best known architecturally inspired artists in the world. Rachel Whiteread, who was won for the Turner Prize in 1993, hit the headlines with her plaster cast of the inside of a house, and her spooky dolls house Village features as part of the Psycho Buildings exhibition.
Other artists who have contributed to the show include Ernesto Neto from Brazil who has created a transparent maze for visitors to explore, with ladders and platforms inserted at various points, allowing you to view the translucent floors from different perspectives. Marco Castillo and Dagoberto Rodriguez have reworked their amazing installation, Frozen Study for Psycho Buildings at Hayward Gallery, which shows the exact moment of an explosion in the interior of
several rooms.
With over a month to prepare the interior and exterior of the gallery for the exhibition, you will be able to see the level of detail and painstaking involvement that the artists and architects behind Psycho Buildings at Hayward Gallery have gone to. Using light, colour and smell to trigger different reactions in different installations, there is a huge sense of dynamic construction going on in each piece, that invites you to react on a totally unique level. A great exhibition for the more adventurous art lover, there is plenty of challenging and exciting art on show to enjoy.
Psycho Buildings at Hayward Gallery runs until the 25th August 2008. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Hayward Gallery, entrance to the exhibition will be 40p on the 11th July 2008.
