I will never go back. The food was ok but there are plenty of places which do the same, if not better. The worst thing about the place is the service. The barman is really rude, arrogant and has no manner. We booked the table at 7.30 and was told they could only do 7 and we would have to finish at 8.30. So we turned up on time, ordered food as soon as we sat down and even got the bill all paid up by 8.15. Before we can put our coats on, the barman came and told us to leave because the next table has arrived, early. The attitude was totally unacceptable, even walked away in the middle of our complaint. There is plenty of competition in Islington and there is absolutely no reason to go back to a place where I was not treated as a customer.

Simply the rudest bar staff in town. We visited more than once in order to give them a chance. An odious little venue worth avoiding.

I've visited this place a few times as I like the decor and its just out of the way but still easy to find. The food was pretty good, but a little overpriced and over hyped in my opinion. The reason I give Public House 2 stars is that I just don't get the barman (possibly owner). I found him rude. I've been back a few times hoping things would change but sadly they've not. So its a no go for me anymore. If you do go I hope you enjoy it, but don't ask for a coke, they don't serve it and you don't want to sit through the pretentious reasons why. All in all it just falls a little below average for me.

In hope to change your mind about Public House, we would love it if you would join us at our monthly event we are hosting there from the 20th march. It's a liquid book club, this involves getting together to discuss the month's book (this month it's John Updike's "couples") and drinking public houses' famous cocktails. The tickets for the event are £30, this includes the book for £10, which we would drop off to you and £20 on the night for 4 cocktails of your choice. If you think this would be something you're interested in, please contact georgia@throughthedoorpromotions.com.Thanks and look forward to hearing from you!Georgia

Do not go there. I am not sure how they managed that but the owners have managed to get viewlondon to delete almost all the negative comments of Public House. It was quite funny as they had been caught out writing flattering reviews about themselves. Anyway if I was to summarise the food is average, the service worse and the owners/barmen spend more time coming onto this site writing about themselves then serving customers. Do not get fooled.

Loved it here. Fantastic cocktails, great staff (friendly, helpful, not over the top), very tasty food which came very well presented, fab atmosphere and overall great value for money. I will be returning again and again.

We had some old friends over from Sweden and went to Public House on the night of the royal wedding expecting to find it very busy but it was actually pretty quiet which was a surprise, anyway, we had a good round table so it was very sociable. So we had a few cocktails and some dinner. There was a Whiskey Julip with rosewater in that was one of the nicest cocktails with whisky I have tried. The food was all well presented and tasting good and service was very friendly and laid back.

Tried Public House after seeing a fair bit of twitter activity and was very happy with my experience. We had dinner but on the sofas as it was a quiet night and everything was pretty good. Service was friendly, food tasty and wine was cold, no complaints at all really.

My boyfriend and I love Public House. The bartenders are really friendly and seem to know everyone's name. The drinks are really yummy too and the food looks great. Will be going back to try dinner there.

I stumbled upon this place by mistake and was instantly drawn in by the atmosphere which manages to be both sophisticated and relaxed. There is real character to both interior (the artwork is original and a visual feast) and the staff, who were delightful. It is always a joy to leave your order at the whim of the barman (both food and drink) and be more than satisfied. The cocktails were on a bar with anything I've had in London and the food was fit to accompany them. The only down point of the night was having to eventually stumble through the candlelight and politely bohemian crown outside and head home. A must.

I’ve been to public house a couple of times. My weeknight experience involved some great food and wines in a relaxed & pleasant atmosphere. The very tasteful décor gives this place character in abundance, unlike many of the drab pubs & bars in the area. The drinks selection is second to none, and is backed up well by friendly and very knowledgeable bar staff. All in all making it a great place to visit on weekends as well. you won’t go wrong checking out this place., highly recommended.

What a cracking place! Stumbled across public house on a mid-week evening and was totally blown away by the decor, but more importantly by the wide-ranging and imaginative drinks selection. Agree the staff are a little eccentric but they're also a good laugh when you get chatting, knowledgeable and passionate when asked about the inspiration for the cocktails. Really chilled atmosphere in midweek and plan to return on a weekend soon when I hear the place really gets going. Interesting to see a couple of dodgy reviews, the staff are rightly proud of what is a unique and unrivalled drinks menu and maybe their strong personalities can intimidate. Cant reccommend the place highly enough after my experience, nice one fellas

I love this place, little hidden gem in Islington, away from the upper st riffraff. Great cocktails and food was very high standard. Cool upbeat atmos, really good vibe had good banter with the bar staff an easy place to meet people, best night i have had in a while.

went to this place with my girlfriend on recommendation of another friend and had a great time, the cocktails are of a very high standard and the food as well, i had the pork medallion was 10/10. even though the staff are eccentric (and maybe a bit mad!!) they still did a great job - this is not somewhere for the lads to go to but somewhere to take a lady or a business meeting

Been to this place a few times and the drinks and food are always excellent. I agree that some of the staff can be a little aloof but I think this adds to the charm.

I have never had problems with asking staff about drinks or food and they always seem happy to talk about it.

My one problem with it is that I get no phone reception there and its difficult to give people directions to it. Short of transporting it to another location I don't know what the management could do about that.

My other half, and female colleagues that I have taken to Public House love the decor and I think it is a very cool place to have a cocktail or beer or two.

This place is far too pretentious for its own good. The bar staff were all completely off their heads and full of themselves. they seemed to think that serving customers was a bit of an inconvenience in their Friday evening. Admittedly the decor is quite cool but there are plenty of good-looking bars where you don't have wait 15 minutes to get a drink served with a look of 'you're not trendy enough for this place'. definitely won't be going back.

A super wannabe place with pretentious bar staff. The place itself is not too bad as a venue but there is no escaping the desperation to be über cool and hip. The drinks also are nothing special. The only thing going for the place is location and the eclectic mix of furnishings which is a nice touch but has been done to greater effect in many other establishments. Will not be returning. Cannot comment on the food as only visited the bar area. Oops I should mention that the provision of individual hand towels in the toilets is a plus!

bar staff unprofessional and would appear to be off their heads! forgetting to put rum in a round of rum & ginger beer? how can you forget to add the spirit to the mixer? throwing ice cubes at one another then when one accidentally hit a customer in the head refused to apologise - despite causing an injury. did initially think was a decent place but the sheer rudeness of the bar staff will ensure i never return.

We had dinner and drinks at Public House last thursday and were both very impressed. Excellent pre dinner cocktails followed by a hearty, delicious feed and finished with a potent nightcap - all accompanied with relaxed and friendly service.

Perhaps the reviewer below went to the wrong place: sambuca shots and vodka-coke trash are about as well suited to Public House as Big Mac and fries is to Nobu!

Definitely going back, and happy that carmen won't be there to sully my evening with such a brainwashed, lowest common denominator mentality!

Please keep upsetting people! We love you and will tell all our friends, except for Larry and Mike who's idea of refined is JD and Ginger Ale...

Hmm, not sure if upsetting people is the way to go. there are plenty of stylish bars that maintain high standards without being rude to their customers.

The decor at this place is great, however the bar staff completely ruined the whole experience for me.

I think the owners may be trying for a bar in the style of the film 'Cocktail' with Tom Cruise. Unfortunately the bar staff seem to have taken it a step too far.

They are arrogant and rude and they were more concerened about making drinks for themselves than the customers. I was in a party of 10 people and we just popped in for a drink because it looked interesting.

Two of our party wanted to have sambucca, however, after waiting for 10 minutes (and the bar wasn't that busy) the bar tender told me, with complete disdain in his voice, that they didn't serve samubucca there.

He, and the other bar staff were also completely inebriated and very rude. The glasses seemed to have been used previously and after pouring our drinks the bar tender actually took a shot of tequila from one of our glasses before re filling it and giving it back to us.

He, and the other bar staff were then laughing and whispering amongst themselves, and were very rude to one of our party who was asking questions about which drink to try. The whole experience was very uncomfortable.

In all we waited 15 minutes for the drinks and the fruit cocktail that I had was truelly unpleasant, sugary and too full of cheap alcohol. It is a shame as it has the potential to be a great place, they just need to sack the current staff team!

You are completely correct about the staff in the bar staff. They are most likely high as kites as they were on the day I went in. They appear not to realise that they are there to serve as well as be fun...shame it could be a great place!

We were invited to eat at Public House for free by the manager as part of the launch of the new kitchen and had a lovely meal.

Trout with clams and broth was a delicious highlight of an excellent meal, although the rocket salad side was inexplicably salty.

One of the most interesting wine lists i've seen and a really warm chilled out vibe. The cocktail list looked great, but didn't get round to trying any this time...

The decor is nice, lighting nice and general overall appearance is good when you enter the bar.

Unfortunately, the service and attitude of the staff does not match the appearance.

The manager insisted on having the doors wide open, regardless of customers sitting there complaining of the cold and putting their coats on (and insisted on returning to the doors every time they closed to re-open and repeat the excuses and complaints again and again.

The pate that I ordered was very uninspiring and servered with some rather over crisp dry bread. This must also be about the only bar in London does doesn't stock or serve Vodka!

Shame as it has the potential to be a real hot spot of Islington. Myself, I won't be rushing back.

Well it does look lovely in there but it’s not just about the looks, or is it?! I went there recently and I must say it was a great disappointment. The potato wedges were stack up in style on a pretty plate, and they turned out to be really soggy and mushy. The curry mayonnaise didn't seem to have much curry in! The raviolis looked very nice, but were undercooked. The bar Manager kept opening the front door after a few customers complained about being in a cold draught, in a provocative and rude way. To summarise there seems to be more arrogance in this place than in all Islington bars added together and the staff could do with a little lesson of humility and a little more professionalism.

I love this place. I visited for the first time a few weeks ago. The decor is tasteful and really comfortable. The bar staff are just great - thank you!
The owners are really focused on delivering the absolute best in drink and food. I ordered a drink and was offered a similar but exquisite alternative which proved far better!
The best thing about Public House is the atmosphere: a refreshing mix of unpretentious within a sexy surrounding. Dont know about you but I'm kind of tired the pretentious atmosphere in a lot of London bars. The owners here seem to have cottoned on to this, and have re-created a 'Free and Gorgeous' atmosphere. If you want great service, sexy food and drink, bit of acoustic music plus vibe, this IS the place. Great to know somewhere like this is available, remember to ask for an alternative to your usual drink, guaranteed you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I had heard that this place was opening (through a friend of a friend of the owner) and must say it's absolutely fantastic. If you want nice drinks with great service and (almost) always somewhere to sit, then this is the place. Many of the bars and pubs in Islington has become a bit "Clapham" (if you'll excuse the comparison, by that I mean noisy bars full of louts and tarts) but not so Public House. The drinks are a veritable feast for the senses, the food is great for the price and the music is at a level condusive to conversation. And it smells nice too, unlike most beer sodden haunts on Upper Street. Shame it is featured on here though, everyone will find out about it!

Damn this review. I live up the road and had been enjoying hanging out here with my mates safe in the knowledge that the hordes never venture off Upper Street. If I can't get a seat from now on I'm holding View London responsible!!!
