The Queens Year exhibition London event celebrates a year in the life of Her Majesty, including a variety of her most popular events such as the Trooping of the Colour and the State Opening of Parliament. Bringing together garments, jewellery, ceremonial dress and historic objects, the exhibition takes a look through the 365 day diary of life as a Monarch.
The Queens Year exhibition
London is home to many of the Queens annual events and celebrations, but many other locations around the UK and the rest of the world regularly feature on her calendar of activities. With hundreds of duties included in her role as Head of State, the Queen can take part in over 250 different official engagements, with audiences, presentations, investitures, visits, receptions, garden parties and numerous luncheons and dinners all included in the mix. Here you can see what she wears, the gifts she has received and the historical artefacts that make the occasions so resplendent with royal pomp.
Ceremonial objects
At the heart of the Queens Year exhibition is a collection of historic ceremonial objects and costume. Alongside the Robe of State which is on display for the very first time, visitors to Buckingham Palace can see the uniforms of attendents at the State Opening of Parliament, her Majesty's racing colours and her regimental tunic and tricorn hat which is worn at the Trooping the Colour. The saddle which was used by the Queen in the latter event until 1986 is also on show.
Regal fashion
Renowned for her brightly coloured wardobe and extensive hat collection, much of the Queens wardrobe, including dresses and jewellery is on display at Buckingham Palace this summer. Ten of her Ascot hats are on show to the public, and three evening dresses designed by the Queens courturier Normal Hartnell, one of which appears accompanied by the Vladimir tiara which has never before been included in an exhibition open to the public.
Official business
Marking more of the Queens official business are the acoutrements of her Privy Council desk which includes the precise table arrangement of every Privy Council meeting with a silver inkstand, pen tray and candlestick. Visitors with a desire to rise up the social scale are sure to be fascinated to see the sword with which new investitures are made, the Great Sword of State and the Mace and Cap of Maintenance at the Queens Year exhibition. You will also be able to see the Robe of State, which was first worn by the Queen to her coronation, and the uniforms of the official State Trumpeter, the Gentleman at Arms, the Herald, the Page of Honour and the Lady in Waiting, all of which play important roles in the historic ceremonies overseen by the monarch.
The Queens Year exhibition London event takes place from Tuesday 27th June - Friday 1st October 2010 at Buckingham Palace as part of the summer opening of the State Rooms. Tickets cost £17.00, £15.00 for concessions, £9.75 for under 17s and under 5s go free.
