A fascinating Quilts exhibition London event hits the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2010 as patchwork and quilt art from the 17th century to the present day go on show. With exhibits from prison ships, castles and contemporary artists, this is one textiles exhibition not to be missed.

Quilts exhibition
London is one of the many places in the country that has been hit by craft fever over the last few years, and now making quilts is almost as fashionable again as it was in the 19th century. With a renewed interest in this homemade textile craft, there are sure to be plenty of people interested in learning the history of several significant quilts from around the world.

Quilts 1700 - 2010
A unique exhibition that has never before taken place in the UK, the Quilts exhibition has more than 65 different quilts on show at the V&A Museum, highlighting the rich and decorative formal examples alongside the more homely and personal ones. Themes such as home, labour, remembrance, patriotism and love all feature in the Quilts exhibition. With each quilt telling a very different story, it is obvious that all have been made by creative and imaginative people.

Tales to tell
The history of the quilt makes it clear that the quilt maker puts more than stitchcraft into their bed cover. Personal touches, such as self portraits, secret code and more plain family symbols and names are all to be seen in the Quilts exhibition in London. From the 1829 coverlet that commemorated Wellington's Victory at Vittoria to the quilt which was created by the women on the HMS Rajah as they were being transported to Australia, each has significant details added by those who have sewn it.

Inspiring a new generation
As quilting has had such a strong resurgence of interest in recent times, it should come as no surprise that alonside the 18th century cot quilt from Deal Castle and the Bishop's Court Quilt made to celebrate a visit from Charles II, there are quilts from contemporary artists. Both Grayson Perry and Tracey Emin have used patchwork in their artworks, and quilts from them feature in the final section of the exhibition.

The Quilts exhibition London event takes place from 10am - 5.45pm, from Saturday 20th March - Sunday 4th July 2010 at Victoria and Albert Museum.
