A Rankin World AIDS Day exhibition takes place at City Hall this winter to mark the special date, and invite visitors to get a closer angle on the story of many HIV sufferers in London.
Rankin World AIDS Day exhibition
Taking over City Hall for just two weeks, this very special exhibition sees Rankin back on the World AIDS Day campaign once more, having captured the images of several Londoners whose lives have been affected by HIV and AIDS. Renowned for his striking images of celebrities, models and other famous people, Rankin here turns his hand to telling the emotive stories of average people, in an attempt to raise awareness of the impact that the disease is still having.
Take a stand
By featuring real people with real problems in the Rankin World AIDS Day exhibition, the photographer and organisers, Body Shop, are calling for individuals to take more responsibility for their actions by wearing a red ribbon and showing support for the fight against HIV. With almost half of all people living with HIV in the UK based in London, this is a very relevant issue for everyone in the city, and they could be coming into contact with a sufferer on a daily basis, and not be aware of it. As one in four still don't know they have the condition because they haven't been tested, this exhibition aims to raise a voice against the stigma and encourage everyone to take a stand.
On show
Making up the bulk of the exhibition are real people who have been directly affected by HIV and AIDS, such as Phoebe and Sadie who lost their father to the disease as he stood on a contaminated needle whilst spending time as an aid worker in Africa. Also featuring the Rankin World AIDS Day exhibition are Michel Sidibe, the executive director of UNAIDS, and singer and renowned campaigner Annie Lennox.
Legendary support
Joining the Mayor of London Boris Johnson in opening the Rankin World AIDS Day exhibition at City Hall is the London HIV Ambassador, Annie Lennox, who was appointed by the Mayor last year to help in the fight against the disease in the capital. The launch also sees some of the people featured in the photos at the City Hall exhibition open the show, alongside the Mayor and the Body Shop Campaigns Director.
The Rankin World AIDS Day exhibition takes place from 11am Monday 29th November - 5pm Friday 10th December 2010 at City Hall. Standard opening hours are 8.30am - 6pm Monday - Thursday, and 8.30am - 5.30pm on Fridays. Entrance is free.
