This November thousands of women are marching through the streets of London in a women only march to draw attention to the levels of violence that are still perpetrated against women in the UK every minute.

Reclaim the Night 2009
Reclaim the Night was originally a women only march and a feminist rally of the 1970s, but now the walk against violence has been reclaimed by a new and younger generation of women. With 1.4 million cases of domestic violence against women and 50,000 rapes occuring every year, Reclaim the Night continues to raise valuable awarenss of the horrifying situation.

Women's march against violence
Last year the event saw over a thousand women take to the streets of London in an attempt to raise awareness of the terrible statistics that face women all across the UK. With a rape occuring on average every 11 minutes and domestic violence a reality for some women every 27 seconds, the march is an extremely important reminder that even in our 21st century modern society, women are still being abused.

Statistics to shock
According to the British Crime Survey there are around 40,000 attempted rapes as well as 300,000 cases of sexual assualt every year. This is even more shocking when you consider that the conviction rate in the UK is the lowest it has ever been and one of the lowest in Europe, meaning that there were more rapists convicted in the 1970s when the Reclaim the Night marches were started.

Rally for all
Ending with a mixed rally at the Camden Centre, Euston, the march will climax with a variety of speakers, live music and entertainment from DJs. The event is organised by the London Feminist Network which formed in 2004 to unite London based feminist groups and individuals into action against domestic violence and abuse.

After party bash
For those that want to celebrate after the rally, the after party kicks off later in the night, featuring DJ sets for a night of hot tunes. Both retro tunes and up to date disco hits will be played by women DJs.

Reclaim the Night 2009 starts 6pm, Saturday 21st November 2009. The march begins at Whitehall Place. For more information, visit the official website below.
