A poignant Remembrance Day installation at St Pauls Cathedral takes place on Friday 11th November this year as a mark of commemoration for the thousands of people who have died in battle during the past century.

Remembrance Day installation at St Pauls
Created entirely from poppy petals, the installation is a unique installation, spanning 30 feet that has been put in place by artist Ted Harrison. Marking not only the men and women who has served their countries and lost their lives in the army, navy and airforce, this Remembrance Day themed artwork also reminds us that thousands of children have also been caught up in the acts of warfare throughout history, and that they are still affected by it today.

Scattered poppies
Located in the white marble circle that is overlooked by the Whispering Gallery, the Remembrance Day installation at St Pauls Cathedral is made from over 5,000 poppies. From the ground level, they seem to have been scattered randomly as if fallen from above, but when viewed from the cathedral's famous gallery, the poppies form a distinct picture of three child soldiers, highlighting the involvement of children in war.

Art in the cathedral
Despite a UN resolution which states that no-one under the age of 18 should be involved in conscription, 250,000 children across the globe are involved in the military, seeing active service and potentially being injured or killed as a result. With one child depicted in poppies from the First World War and the other two from more recent times, the artist and the Canon both hope to remind visitors of the tragedy of conflict and the loss of innocence in war.

Remembrance Day in London
Several other events are taking place to mark Remembrance Day in London for 2011, alongside the Remembrance Day installation at St Pauls. Visitors to the Imperial War Museum and the Royal Airforce Museum can take part in children's workshops or a special ceremony to mark the occassion, whilst the traditional Silence in the Square takes place on Remembrance Day itself and the parade from Whitehall to the cenotaph will take place on Remembrance Sunday 13th November 2011.
